For whatever reason, Starbucks hasn’t been able to keep their political opinions out of the public sphere. Perhaps it’s because they have a customer base that’s more liberal than average – because what business wants to risk alienating their customers?
Their latest entry into the political arena is in joining a handful of other companies that are virtue signaling just how opposed they are to Donald Trump. Following his 90-day travel ban, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz announced that the company would be hiring 10,000 refugees over the next five years. This came after Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Amazon, Ford, Goldman Sachs and Microsoft all came out publicly against the “ban.”

I write to you today with deep concern, a heavy heart and a resolute promise. Let me begin with the news that is immediately in front of us: we have all been witness to the confusion, surprise and opposition to the Executive Order that President Trump issued on Friday, effectively banning people from several predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States, including refugees fleeing wars. I can assure you that our Partner Resources team has been in direct contact with the partners who are impacted by this immigration ban, and we are doing everything possible to support and help them to navigate through this confusing period.
Hiring Refugees: We have a long history of hiring young people looking for opportunities and a pathway to a new life around the world. This is why we are doubling down on this commitment by working with our equity market employees as well as joint venture and licensed market partners in a concerted effort to welcome and seek opportunities for those fleeing war, violence, persecution and discrimination. There are more than 65 million citizens of the world recognized as refugees by the United Nations, and we are developing plans to hire 10,000 of them over five years in the 75 countries around the world where Starbucks does business. And we will start this effort here in the U.S. by making the initial focus of our hiring efforts on those individuals who have served with U.S. troops as interpreters and support personnel in the various countries where our military has asked for such support.
Granted, it’s preferable to have refugees working at Starbucks than on welfare (and over 90 percent of middle eastern refugees do receive food stamps). Still, Starbucks didn’t do this for that reason, they made their decision to try to appease liberal consumers.
And they’re total hypocrites. As the Conservative Post reminds us:
They want to bring refugees here in America (with connection with terrorism) and check what they do in Saudi Arabia.
Women are not allowed to enter their stores.
They don’t have a problem operating in a country that beheads homosexuals, doesn’t let women drive or participate in public life, and bans Jews from entering (as do six of the seven countries included in the so-called Muslim ban). Heck, when it comes to their exclusion of women from public life, they’re fine being complicit in it!
The country is so backward that Starbucks can’t even use the logo we’re all aware with on their stores, as it’s apparently too obscene (yes, really). Behold, their separate Saudi logo to appease their Muslim rulers:
Should we expect Starbucks to hire 10,000 female workers to make up for this? I won’t hold my breath. On a positive note, the company’s stock has been falling ever since the refugee announcement. While Starbucks eventually changed the rule at the store, the stock will surely fall even further once news of how they treated women in Saudi Arabia. And that’s bad news for them!
