Just before meeting to vote on Monday, a group of rogue electors from the Electoral College accused Donald Trump and his supporters of criminal conspiracy. For most of the day yesterday, Americans were holding their breaths hoping electors would uphold our nation’s Democracy.
According to Occupy Democrats, some electors reported being threatened by Trump if they decided to cast their votes against him.
“We have gotten reports from multiple people that the Donald Trump campaign is putting pressure on Republican electors to vote for him based on future political outcomes based on whether they vote for Donald Trump or not,” an elector reportedly said. “It’s all political, basically. If Trump becomes the president, he’s going to be able to put pressure on the state parties and they won’t be involved anymore.”
The electors who claimed threats were the “Hamilton Electors” who were working to vote against Trump despite the fact that he won the presidency in their states. They named themselves after Hamilton because of his remarks in “Federalist Papers No. 68” that electors have a sacred duty to ensure “the office of the President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.”
There is, of course, no evidence that Trump threatened these electors, but that didn’t stop them from getting their lawyers involved.
“In order for the electoral college votes to be considered certifiable and reliable it has to be taken without undue influence, including intimidation,” Jessica Marlies, a lawyer for the electors, commented.
What do you think of these claims? Is this absolutely outrageous? Are you tired of people smearing Trump’s name?
