According to reports, three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers were killed yesterday and three others were wounded when a former Marine who had driven to Louisiana from his Missouri home opened fire on the m as they responded to a 911 call about a man in black, yielding a rifle.
The 29-year-old gunman was later identified as Gavin Long. He died at the scene. Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said that there is no longer an active shooter scenario, but the investigation is ongoing.
“We believe the person that shot and killed our officers, that he is a person that was shot and killed at the scene,” Edmonson confirmed. He said authorities do not believe there are “any other shooters held up…in the Baton Rouge area.”
Earlier in the day, the East Baton Rouge’s Sheriff’s Office had said that officials believe two suspects were still at large.
The shooting took place mid-morning, less than a mile from police headquarters. Two of the officers who lost their lives worked for the Baton Rouge police department, while one worked for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office.
Long reportedly served as a “Data Network Specialist” and he was in the service for five years. He was deployed to Iraq between 2008 and January 2009.
During his service, he actually received a number of medals.
“This is truly a sad day in Baton Rouge,” Mayor Kip Holden commented. “We continue to ask the question and continue to make the statement, let peace prevail in Baton Rouge and this parish. We must look ahead. We thank our officers who have fallen in the line of duty, we pray for their families and we pray for peace everywhere.”
What do you think of these new reports? Do you pray for these officers and their families?
